Today we leave Tortuguero – some history, in the 1970s the area was very different as it was used for logging and banana plantation. Then the government decided to return it to natural rainforest. As a result the canopy is still quite low compared to other natural rainforest such as Brazil. Still growing.

However as we started off in the boat to go to our pick up, we had to pause for a swimming iguana! Then we had to turn back as the road route we were due to use was closed. So we returned to Mwamba lodge whilst they hired smaller boats to take us along smaller channels.

The journey by water was challenging as the boats often hit the bottom but we made the contact point for the onward transit to the meeting point to collect the hire car – delayed.

The car journey to Trojan lodge was challenging – traffic was awful around San Jose then we got a bit lost. Eventually getting to the right road, through the mountains in the dark and clouds, which was challenging to say the least.

When we turned off the main road we ended up on a hairy dust road with hairpin bends in the dark. But we made it.

Trojan lodge looks great in dark so hopefully even better in the light

We have gone from 30oC to 10oC! jumper required!

So to finish
